The International Women's Group is a social group of wives of international and migrant students of QUT. Without the usual support of extended family and the wider community, partners of students often suffer from isolation and homesickness.

The main objective of the International Women's Group is to help members establish friendships and build a supportive network. ISS can also assist members through English conversation classes, choosing child care facilities, school enrolments, and when possible, locating part-time employment. Activities are organised according to members interests and needs. Past activities include cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts appreciation, and picture framing classes, pottery, biscuit factory visits, farm visits, picnics and day trips for the whole family.

ISS maintains confidentiality and employs counsellors sensitive to cross-cultural issues and relationship adjustments experienced by couples or families in a "new" environment.

Past activities of the Group include:

  • Workshops on picture framing, pottery and floral arrangements;
  • Visits to biscuit factory, Women's Health Services, Women's Info link;
  • Seminars offered included Health and Well-beings for Women, Nutrition Needs for the Family, Cross-cultural Parenting, Job seeking resources, Relaxation and Massage techniques, etc.
  • Cooking demonstrations
  • Family Outings

There were also opportunities to share members' cultures, arts and crafts with one another. Our cooking demonstrations of cuisines from different countries are always popular. Family outings are organised during school holidays on requests from members.

The Group also offers an English Conversation Class for members who would like to improve their English conversation and communication skills. This semester the Class is going to be offered on Tuesday mornings from 10.00am-12.00noon from Week 2 (29/07/08) .
