Australia has two categories of schools - government (or state schools) and private schools. Both accept international students and receive government funding. All Queensland state schools are mixed in sexes, that is co-educational. Some private secondary schools are not co-educational and often have a religious affiliation. All schools accepting international students must be government-registered and have to meet special requirements under Australian Government legislation. Another requirement is to provide, or have access to, specialist English language support. State schools offer students a wide range of programs to develop their talents and interests.Schooling for certain levels is compulsory according to Queensland Government Regulations. Education Queensland International (EQI) is the branch within the Queensland Department of Education responsible for allowing dependent children of overseas students to study in Queensland schools. If you are planning on sending your children to school in Queensland it is important that you read this EQI page on Dependant Children of Overseas Students. Information regarding the application process, course fees, the school system and calender can be found in this link. Students on Australian Government Scholarships or Scholarships recognised by the Queensland Board of Education are exempt from paying fees Contact private schools directly for their fees list. High school aged children of newly arrived international students from non-English speaking countries, can be placed into a school with a strong component of English as a Second Language support for a period of time. The purpose of this is to provide as much support as possible for these children to adjust to using English as a Second Language. They can usually be transferred to another State high school within one year.
