Any contact with the law can be a scary experience, more so when you are an international student unfamiliar with the legal system. Our Info Sheet on legal issues is a good introduction to your rights while a temporary resident of Australia and also to the legal system.

Sometimes it may be necessary for you to seek legal advice in relation to traffic accidents, offences, immigration (visas), tenancy, domestic violence, discrimination, illegal drugs and many other matters affecting our lives. Many people suffer unnecessarily because they fear seeking legal advice would be expensive. Legal advice and assistance can be obtained for free or at the reduced cost.

If in doubt, speak to an International Student Adviser about your situation to determine whether professional assistance is needed and where to seek help. All discussions are kept confidential.
