Advisers at International Student Services provide a professional, confidential and free counselling service to International Students and Australian students from diverse cultural backgrounds. An International Student Adviser can give you individual support; act as a mediator when appropriate and assist in the event of a personal crisis or emergency.

There may be times when you need support or advice about your social environment personal relationships, academic studies including your rights and obligations, time management, employment, or finance. Visiting an Adviser helps you gain perspective and clarity on a particular issue and helps you explore the options more clearly.

International Student Advisers are qualified social workers, psychologists and counsellors, who have a deep understanding of issues affecting international students. They are very experienced in helping students from diverse cultures settle into their new life here at QUT.

How we work

We can talk to you in a personal, face to face session or if you prefer, over the phone or through email. At times it will be possible to help you within one session, while at other times your issue may require further follow-up sessions to find a resolution. Sessions can last for up to one hour each time and are on a one to one basis.

When there are issues common to many students, we can offer group sessions providing support and information or advice. Examples of past group sessions are: peer support to help students settle in, how to manage time, how to manage exams , and returning home workshops for graduating students.

All information is confidential and is not disclosed to other univeristy sections except in the following circumstances:

  • You have given permission to disclose information to another party;
  • In exceptional situations where failure to disclose information would place you or another person at serious and imminent risk; or
  • When we are required by law to disclose information

Students can drop in to see an Adviser at Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove campuses and by appointment at Carseldine campus. Contact ISS at 3138 2019.
