Brisbane is the capital of the State of Queensland. Queensland occupies about one-third of the top half of Australia on the Pacific Coast.

Geography

Brisbane city is surrounded by mountains and is situated in the south-east corner of the State. Slightly more than one million people live in the metropolitan area, which is about the size of Hong Kong. There are also large population centres to the north south and west, and the whole region immediately around Brisbane accommodation approximately two million people.

Language

The official language of Australia is English, but as up to one-fifth of all Queenslanders were born in other countries, some people will be able to communicate in your own language. There is a flourishing Chinatown section in Brisbane City, and active communities of many other nationalities throughout Brisbane.

QUT has produced some short video clips to give you an idea of what Brisbane is like.
