Moving to a new city and a new university can be an overwhelming experience, especially if you haven't lived away from home before. The better prepared you are for the changes that are likely to occur, the better you'll be able to settle into your new environment. It's never too early to start planning for this change. The information on these pages is meant to assist you in your preparation on both a personal and cultural level. The first and probably most important of the many personal adjustments that you will need to make is that you will be separated from family and friends. There might be times when you feel very lonely. Keep in mind that other students feel exactly the same. Most students find that, as they begin to make friends, the loneliness will get less. Before you leave for Australia, tell your family and friends not to panic if they receive an unhappy letter or phone call from you in your first few weeks away. Contact ISS when you need help with any personal matter. Predeparture BriefingsStudents may have the opportunity to meet ISS staff and current students during the pre-departure briefings. These briefings help you prepare for your trip answering any questions you may have about life in Brisbane and studying at QUT. Predeparture Briefings for students commencing in Semester 1 2008 are listed below. For those unable to attend one of the predeparture briefing it is important that you go through the predeparture presentation as it contains important information for you. Please note that the pre-departure briefing is not an alternative to the compulsory Orientation Program in Brisbane. Semester 2, 2008
