Moving to a new city and a new university can be an overwhelming experience, especially if you haven't lived away from home before. The better prepared you are for the changes that are likely to occur, the better you'll be able to settle into your new environment. It's never too early to start planning for this change. The information on these pages is meant to assist you in your preparation on both a personal and cultural level.
The first and probably most important of the many personal adjustments that you will need to make is that you will be separated from family and friends. There might be times when you feel very lonely. Keep in mind that other students feel exactly the same. Most students find that, as they begin to make friends, the loneliness will get less. Before you leave for Australia, tell your family and friends not to panic if they receive an unhappy letter or phone call from you in your first few weeks away. Contact ISS when you need help with any personal matter.
The International Student Services webpages have important information to assist you in preparation to come to QUT and in settling into your temporary home in Brisbane. Please make sure you spend some time to familiarise your self with these pages. If you do not need require all the information immediately, you will know where to find it when the need arises.
In the meantime, have a look at our self-guided predeparture presentation which covers the essentials for those of you leaving for Brisbane soon. Please note that the pre-departure presentation is not an alternative to the compulsory Orientation Program in Brisbane.
