Student Visa

DO NOT ALLOW YOUR VISA TO EXPIRE - There are a number of Student Visas expiring in July and August 2008. Please check your Student Visa for its expiry date.

Those students whose visas are expiring shortly and;

Are intending to continue to study should submit an IE Form to the Student Centre immediately for a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for the purpose of applying for a Student Visa. The IE Form is available from the Student Centres and the student services website at: www.studentservices.qut.edu.au/info/forms

Are completing their studies at the end of Semester one, June/July 2008 and wish to stay longer in Australia must apply for a Visitor Visa. Students should consult the DIAC website at: www.immi.gov.au or call DIAC on 131881 or visit the Student Centre for further information.

NB: DIAC is advised if you finish your course early. i.e.. more than 28 days before your visa expires. Students who are continuing to study must also renew compulsory Overseas Student Health Cover to avoid huge medical and/or hospital expenses. Health insurance is not compulsory on a Visitor Visa . However, it is highly recommended that you take out health insurance to cover unforeseen medical or hospital expenses.

If you have already submitted an IE Form please be aware that Student Business Services has large number of these forms that need processing at the moment. We are working through them in priority order (i.e. Students with visas expiring at the end of July will be given priority). Please be patient and rest assured that you will receive a response from Student Business Services in time to renew your visa before it expires.

Enrolment

Students must maintain an enrolment program that will enable you to complete your course within the dates stated on your eCOE (you should finish your course by the end of your visa). All commencing students to start by enrolling in 4 units (or standard workload for their course). There are limited circumstances under which you will be able to extend your study beyond the timeframe on your eCOE. Visa extensions are not automatically granted.

Please ensure that you maintain correct enrolment and seek guidance from QUT (Faculty or ISS) as soon as you are aware you may not be able to complete within this timeframe.

East West Activities

There will be an informal lunch at the East West Centre (I Block, Gardens Point – Under the Pool), Wednesday the 30th of July at 12:00 pm. We will be talking about places that we have been and places that we would like to go. If you have a special place or trip that you would like to share, or maybe there’s a place that you are planning to travel to, please come along and share your experiences and photos. This is a way to meet new people as well as being involved in a friendly chat. There will be light refreshments provided.

Do you have any special talents that you would like to share with other students? You could be an expert Origami folder, or a great cook, or maybe a bongo player. If you have something that you’d like to share, please contact Sarah Pearce at sarah.pearce@qut.edu.au

Oxfam Community Aid Abroad

The East West Centre is currently organising a group of likeminded students who are willing to volunteer their time to an international organisation called Oxfam. We wish to work with Oxfam to facilitate a greater understanding of human rights both internationally and locally.

There are a number of opportunities for QUT students to become involved in supporting Oxfam, whether by donating their time to events or campaigns, or by forming or becoming involved in active groups on campus and off. You can also try your hand at raising money as a means of providing much needed aid to initiatives around the world.

If you would like to become involved, or would like more information, please contact Sarah Pearce at sarah.pearce@qut.edu.au

Bridge to Brisbane Fun Run

QUT has organised a team of enthusiasts to be involved in the Bridge to Brisbane fun run on Sunday the 7th of September 2008. The Bridge to Brisbane is an annual event that raises money for Youngcare – which is a charity designed to support young Australians who require a high level of care and supervision. Most of the people requiring assistance from Youngcare are intellectually or physically impaired and require full time, 24 hour care. Money raised by the Bridge to Brisbane will be used to build facilities and residences for these young people, giving them access to around the clock care as well as fun, and interactive activities designed to suit their individual needs.

If you would like to be involved, you have the choice of entering either the 10km or the 5km run, walk or stroll. You don’t have to be a runner to be involved and can complete the course at your own pace. There is an entry fee of $25 for the 5km and $30 for the 10km run. East West will be organising training groups for entrants to train together and make friends.

Please contact Sarah Pearce at eastwest@qut.edu.au for further information.

QUT Cliffhangers Rockclimbing Club

The QUT Cliffhangers Rockclimbing Club BBQ advertised in the Orientation Guide for 16/07/08 was cancelled due to rain and dangerous conditions on the Kangaroo Point Cliffs.

The Rock Climbing has an Open Day being held on 26/07/08 starting at 9am at the Kangaroo Point Cliffs. QUT Cliffhangers meet at the Kangaroo Point Cliffs Monday and Wednesday 6-9pm. If you wish to be involved in the Rockclimbing club, please visit www.qutcliffhangers.com for more information.

East West Soccer Tournament

There will be an East West Soccer Tournament in semester 2 (date to be confirmed). The teams will be structured as 6 a side mixed team (minimum of 2 girls), so you will need at least 6 people in order to register a team.

There are plenty of prizes up for grabs including the East West Cup and cash prizes for the winning team. There will also be a lucky door prize for spectators announced at the end of the weekend.

Contact Sarah Pearce at eastwest@qut.edu.au for more information or if you would like to get involved or would like to register a team. Please note: You will need to register your team by 1st of August at the latest.

Multicultural Media Library

The East West Centre is encouraging students and staff to donate books, CD's and DVD's from your home country (in English or other languages) to be borrowed by international/domestic students and QUT staff through the Multicultural Media Library. The Multicultural Media Library aims to foster a mutual appreciation of diverse cultures.

Students and staff are invited to be part of the exchange process to discover new and exciting materials which may differ from their own current life experiences. By opening the doorway for this exchange, we are hoping to facilitate an environment for people to learn of popular mediums of media in different countries, whilst enjoying the experience.

We ask students and staff to donate anything which they think will be helpful for others to learn about their culture in an enjoyable atmosphere, in the form of cultural books, movies and/or CD’s.

Contact the East West Centre if you think that you have an item (or two) to donate. Please contact Sarah Pearce at eastwest@qut.edu.au for more information.
